Asha Bhosle was an Indian playback singer, recording artist, actress, entrepreneur, and television personality whose career extended from 1943 to 2026. Across more than eight decades, she built one of the largest recording catalogues in the history of Indian music, performing thousands of songs for feature films, independent albums, devotional releases, classical works, ghazals, folk music, and pop productions in more than twenty languages. Her ability to interpret a wide range of musical styles established her as one of the defining voices of Indian recorded music.
Born Asha Mangeshkar in Goa, Sangli State, British India, she was introduced to music by her father, Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar, a classical vocalist and theatre performer. Following his death in 1942, she entered the film industry at an early age alongside her siblings to help support the family. She recorded her first song for the Marathi film "Majha Bal" in 1943 and made her Hindi playback debut with "Chunariya" in 1948, beginning a recording career that would span generations.
Her commercial breakthrough came during the 1950s through collaborations with composer O. P. Nayyar. She later recorded extensively for composers including S. D. Burman, R. D. Burman, Ravi, Khayyam, Laxmikant–Pyarelal, Kalyanji–Anandji, Bappi Lahiri, Ilaiyaraaja, and A. R. Rahman. Her catalogue includes celebrated recordings such as "Piya Tu Ab To Aaja," "Dum Maro Dum," "Chura Liya Hai Tumne Jo Dil Ko," "Yeh Mera Dil," "Dil Cheez Kya Hai," "Mera Kuch Saaman," and "Radha Kaise Na Jale." Beyond Indian cinema, she collaborated with international artists including Ali Akbar Khan, the Kronos Quartet, Boy George, and Gorillaz, earning two Grammy Award nominations.
Throughout her career, Bhosle received numerous honours, including two National Film Awards, nine Filmfare Awards, the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the Padma Vibhushan, the Banga Bibhushan, and the Maharashtra Bhushan. In 2011, Guinness World Records recognized her as the most recorded artist in music history, acknowledging the extraordinary scale of her recorded output.
In addition to her recording career, Bhosle established the Asha's restaurant chain and remained active through concerts, television appearances, and special recording projects during her later years. She died in Mumbai on 12 April 2026 at the age of 92. Her catalogue continues to serve as a significant reference point in Indian cinema and recorded music, reflecting a legacy that has influenced generations of performers and audiences worldwide.
